Wooden Architecture Museum Taltsy

"Museum of Wooden Architecture"

The extraordinary architectural wonder of Russia

This incredible open-air wooden architecture museum is full of settlements of the indigenous people of Siberia.

Most of the buildings presented here were built as far back as the 17th Century up to the 20th Century and were brought here after their villages flooded when the Irkutsk damns burst. The museum is described by the President of the Russian Federation as a highly valuable object of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia.

Founded in 1969 and spreading over 67 hectares next to Lake Baikal, there are over 40 monuments of architectural heritage and 8,000 exhibits of high historic value. The most valuable in Taltsy are the Saviour’s gate tower of the fort of Ilimsk and an active Kazan Chapel, both incredible in architecture and in historic culture.

This tour is just a glimpse into the life of old Siberia.
