Budgeting in Russia

While planning a trip abroad, one of the most important factors to take into consideration is how much spending money you will need.

In a country such as Russia, prices can vary greatly, but in order to help you plan your adventure, we have put together a short guide on the average amount you can expect to pay for a small range of goods and services when exploring the city and adventuring along Russia’s railways.

Please Note: These average costs were accurate as of summer 2015.

Life in the city

No one travels just to stay cooped up in a hotel room. We all travel to experience local history, culture and customs. Unfortunately, this comes with a price. Fortunately, in Russia, this price is very affordable. Moscow is, of course, more expensive than most cities in Russia, but thanks to a weakened rouble, it is certainly not among the ‘most expensive cities in the world’ as in previous years.

To calculate an estimate of what money you may need to take with you, select how many times you may purchase each item, and then select the currency in which you will be buying your roubles. Your total budget will be calculated at the bottom.

Life on-board

Many Russians consider long distance journeys on their incredible railways an adventure, and they pack accordingly. Because of this, you will find many locals bringing picnics on-board and they are not shy in sharing it around the cabin. So it is wise to be prepared to reciprocate in kind.

And don’t forget, there are rarely showers on-board, so plan ahead…
