Budgeting in Russia

When planning a trip, especially a Trans-Siberian adventure, one important factor is how much money you'll need when you're actually there.

In a country as vast as Russia, and especially the Trans-Siberian which spans three countries, prices can greatly vary. If you're visiting large cities, like Moscow, Beijing, St. Petersburg, you can expect things to be more expensive but it is still easy to make your budget work.

We've put together a short guide on the average amount you can expect to pay for some everyday expenses and services while exploring the cities and adventuring along Russia's railways.

Please Note: These costs are only a guide and not exact.

Life in the city

You don't travel so you can stay cooped up in your hotel room. You want to experience the place you're visiting, see the history, eat and drink the local cuisine and throw yourself into culture and customs!

Moscow and St. Petersburg are, of course, more expensive than most cities in Russia but overall they're still friendly to traveller budgets.

To calculate an estimate of what money you may need to take with you, select how many times you may purchase each item, and then select the currency in which you will be buying your roubles. Your total budget will be calculated at the bottom.

Life on-board

Many Russians treat long distance railway journeys as a social event and pack accordingly. You'll find many locals bringing picnics on-board and they're not shy about sharing it around the cabin. Be prepared to reciprocate if you want to make friends!

And don’t forget, there are rarely showers on-board, so make sure you plan ahead…
