| I have just tried 'yuilop'
This gave me free sms from android smartphone (with internet on) in england to non smartphone in russia (no internet on Russian phone it just arrived there as an ordinary sms). It isn't yet available in england on the android marketplace thingy, but the developer emailed me a copy to try. It seems to work fine. yuilop.com I think at the moment it is for android and apple
The SMSs are free ... kind of. you have to earn points. by inviting friends to join, downloading game software etc. so i have no idea if this is a good or bad thing and how effective it is or even if there is a danger of the app doing weird things (you hear stories......) I think as with many of these apps it is also free to sms from yuilop smartphone to yuiliop smartphone.
All I can say is that my SMSs were, seemingly, delivered quickly to Russia and it didn't cost me anything.
I suppose my major concerns are: is it in any way dodgy - although the developer responded quickly and sensibly to three emails from me which seems encouraging. However, to get points I had to download some games and register then uninstall the games which was a bit of a pain. And I worry about the security issues - potential problems involved in doing this.
And also i worry about running out of points. I currently have 88!!
Anyone else like to comment on it or know anything about it? I don't feel as though i can recommend it as i don't know enough about it but maybe someone out there does.

| Warning. I just tried an app called 'Handcent' which looks good. It seems to allow you to send free sms from handcent enabaled smartphone to handcent enabled smartphone as long as you have wi-fi or at least an internet connection.
I mistakenly thought it also did this for sending sms from my smartphone to a non-smartphone in Russia. It seems (I may be wrong) that whilst it does this, it just sends it via your ordinary text messaging service and costs a fortune (IMHO).
I may be wrong. I have written to Handcent to clarify the situation but it seems that is how it operates. Which is a great shame as it has a wonderful interface.
Shall let you know more once I receive a reply from them.
At the moment the cheapest option seems to be either yuilop (but with some faffing on gaining points) or 'send2mobiles'. I am leaning towards 'send2mobiles' but...... I have not been able to get a reply from them in several days which I find slightly concerning. | |
