Let the cuisine of Buryatia excite your taste-buds
The cuisine of Buryatia is largely influenced by the nomadic lives of the Buryats, whose main source of nutrition comes from the food of their land. With that said, the Buryat national cuisine heavily consists of meat dishes, potatoes, freshly grown crops, and food made from dairy such as salamat.
Your taste-tastic excursion begins when your guide collects you from the agreed destination, after which you will commence your expedition to Tabagatay village. There will be a short stop at the ‘sleeping lion mountain’, where you are free to briefly venture around the sacred place of the Buryat Buddhists, and admire the awe-inspiring vistas of the Selenga River and the alpine landscape surrounding it.
Upon arrival in the native village, your guide will lead you to a local museum filled with traces of the regions history, where you will find remnants telling the story of the long-standing traditions of the Buryats. Continue on with a fleeting visit to the church of the Old-Believers, then on to have lunch which includes traditional dishes such as shulen, buuza, and shchi.
Your Buryatia adventure resumes when you arrive in the heart of the village. The villagers will greet you with a customary welcoming, a folk ceremony involving a traditional song and dance performance. Shortly after you’ve had the chance to immerse yourself in the traditions of the natives, it will be time for you to say your goodbyes and then continue your journey to Arbijil Village. Along the way, your guide will excite you with insight into Buddhism in Buryatia, familiarise you with the language of the Buryats, and introduce you to a few new Russian words through song.
The first stop in the Arbijil village is the Atsagat dastan, and then after you will continue to the museum of Agvan Dorzhiev to learn about the Dalai-Lama. During your time there, your guide will take you inside of a private Buryat yurt to receive an enthused welcoming from your gracious hosts. While inside the yurt, you get to experience the Buryat-Mongol throat singing tradition, and hear stories of the mysterious legends of the region. For the brief moment when you experience the unique culture, you will also partake in yokhor dance, shaage, and archery.
After you’ve been introduced to the Buryat way of life, your host will invite you to learn how to cook ‘Buuza’, traditional Buryat dumplings with a meat filling. After you’ve uncovered the secret to Buryat cuisine, you get to sit down with your hosts and enjoy a delicious dinner consisting of noodle soup, salamat, omul fish, shanga and tea. After your tour concludes, your guide will accompany you back to an agreed destination.
