Ivolginsky Buddhist Datsan
"Ivolginsky Buddhist Datsan"
Discover Buddhism in Ulan Ude, and uncover Russia's religious diversity
On this incredible excursion, your tour guide leads you to experience tranquillity in the steppe, starting at one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world, 23 km from Ulan Ude. The journey takes you beyond the rolling plains and breath-taking Siberian steppes, past ancient wooden houses, where you will find the colourful and vibrant temples as they emerge from afar.
While discovering the village of Buddhism, you can learn about the history of the Ivolginsky Datsan, after which your guide will lead you to explore the several temples located within the monastery’s complex, including the Sockshin-Gugan and the Maidrin-Sume.
We recommend that you start this tour at 9 am, as this way you’ll have an opportunity to attend the morning prayer service. Also, there is a possibility to receive blessing from Imperishable Body of Khambo-Lama Itigelov. There is a souvenir market outside, offering a variety of cashmere and leather goods.
The monastery has a mixture of wooden houses for the monks, where many of the lamas reside, and once inside you have the opportunity to observe the monks as they engage in prayer. If you are lucky, you may be able to engage in a personal spiritual consultation with a lama. Though they do not expect payment for this, they do appreciate a small donation for their time. After this, you and your guide will embark on the journey back to the city of Ulan-Ude, where you excursion ends with dropping off at your accommodation.
