Mongolian Transit Visas

Transit visas are used by people who travel via Mongolia from one country to another without stopping and are slightly cheaper than tourist visas.

A transit visa is a specific type of visa for people who are travelling (or transiting) through Mongolia to a third country without stopping or breaking their journey on-route, for example, going to China from Russia via Mongolia overland by train.

You may not use a transit visa if you are returning to the country that you entered Mongolia from, for example entering from Russia and then going directly back to Russia again and you should not use a transit visa if you intend to stop over in Mongolia, in these cases you should use a tourist visa.

Are there any external issues which may affect my visa processing?

Please see the following link for any processing issues which may be affecting the Mongolian visa service.

What is the processing time?

The processing time is the number of business days that it will take us to obtain your visa once we have received all your documents, prepared the application and lodged it with the Mongolian consulate. Typically we will lodge your application the next business day after we receive it.

The day we receive your visa from the Consulate, we will send it to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery so you will have it the next business day before 1 pm or optionally hold it at our office for your collection.

The consulate business days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, excluding UK and Mongolian public holidays.

How long are the visas valid for?

The transit visa is valid for entry ninety days from the date the application is lodged at the Consulate and the transit through Mongolia should be completed before the visa expires. Once you enter Mongolia, you have three (3) days to make your transit and exit the country.

What documents do I need to provide with my application pack?

The documents that you need to provide to allow us to lodge your application at the consulate depend on which type of visa you are applying for and if you are using Real Russia to provide your travel services in Mongolia.

  1. A completed and signed consulate visa application form.
  2. Your passport with minimum two blank pages valid for at least 6 months after the end date of your requested visa validity. Make sure that your passport is signed, the Consulate will not accept a passport that is not signed.
  3. One colour passport photo taken against a plain white background, printed on photographic paper.
  4. If you have not purchased your travel tickets through Real Russia, we will also need you to provide:
    - Confirmation of both inbound and outbound flight or train bookings, these may be either a copy of the tickets or the reservations
    - An official itinerary on a headed paper from your tour company in Mongolia listing all services that you purchased through them and the dates.
  5. Payment (if not paying online).
