Russian visa biometrics

All applicants (apart from children under 12 years of age) wishing to apply for their Russian visas in the UK on or after 10th December 2014 will need to provide a scan of their fingerprints as a part of the visa application process.

How does this affect me?

We are working closely with the Russian consulate to lessen the impact of the new changes and to ensure that the process of submitting your biometric data goes as smoothly as possible.

Overall, the rules and process remain the same. The only difference is that you will now have to be present at the time your documents are submitted at the Russian Visa Application Centre in order to give a scan of your fingerprints.

How does the Russian visa biometrics process work?

  1. Complete an online visa application form on our website for either a tourist visa or a business visa and follow the instructions you receive in the next steps email.
  2. Once you are ready, you can send your passport and any other requested documents to our London office by post, courier, deliver them to us in person or via a nominated person.
  3. We will check the documents you provide, prepare any invitations or documents you need and complete your visa application pack.
  4. We will contact you to confirm a suitable day and time when you are available to visit the Russian Visa Application Centre in London to have your biometric data (fingerprints) taken. Please note that the Visa Application Centre is open between 8:30am and 3:00pm Monday to Friday, and appointments should be confirmed no later than 3:30pm the previous day.
  5. In terms of applying for your visa at the Russian Visa Application Centre, there are three options available depending on how and when you deliver your application documents to us as well as what time is convenient for you to submit your fingerprints:


    a) If you post your documents to our London office and you come to the Russian Visa Application Centre between 12:30pm and 2:00pm, our courier will meet you outside and hand you your completed visa application pack.

    b) If you submit your documents to us but prefer submitting your fingerprints before 12:30pm or after 2:00pm, then you can visit our London office first, collect your completed visa application pack from us and go to the Russian Visa Application Centre by yourself. It is only around a 20-25 minute walk from our office (by tube and short walk).

    c) You can drop your documents off at our London office any weekday. Once we have prepared your visa application pack, you can go straight to the Russian Visa Application Centre to submit them and provide your fingerprints. Since we need sometime to check your paperwork and the last applicants are admitted to the Visa Centre at 3:00pm, we would recommend getting to our office no later than 12:30pm.


  6. You will then be asked to provide a scan of each of your fingers. This can take between 15 minuted and 1 hour depending on the number of applicants in the queue.
  7. That's it, we will do the rest! We will manage your application with the Consulate, and when your visa is ready, we will collect your passport on your behalf, confirm the visa has been issued correctly, and either post it to your selected address on the same day or hold it in our office for collection.

Is my biometric information secure?

Yes, in line with many other countries, Russia has introduced biometric data collection of visa applicants to help with managing its security and control illegal immigration. The equipment used is similar to that used by the UK government when collecting biometric data from applicants for UK visas, and the data will be stored and managed by the ministry of foreign affairs and migration services for the purposes outlined above.
