The Christmas holidays are almost upon us and what better way to celebrate than by taking a trip to one of the world’s most spectacular festive destinations. Moscow is renowned for its Christmas spirit with festive celebrations spanning over 80 sites throughout the city as part of the Journey to Christmas 2019 festival. Visitors to the city can enjoy everything from decorated boulevards and exquisite light shows to interactive street performances and bustling Christmas markets.
If you are looking for something to spice up your Christmas then look no further, Moscow is the perfect winter wonderland for all the family, and to prove it, we have put together a list of our top five things to do in Moscow for Christmas 2019.
St Basil's Cathedral at Night
No trip to Moscow is complete without a visit to the Kremlin, and there is no better time than Christmas to see the Kremlin in all its majesty. The whole complex appears like something out of a fairy-tale with ornate decorations blending seamlessly with the Gold and multi-coloured domes of the surrounding churches while a towering Christmas tree dominates the skyline. Take a stroll through the grounds of the complex with a walking tour where you can explore the Kremlin’s many tourist hotspots including the armoury chamber with its numerous state treasures from Moscow’s ancient past and experience the magical St Basil’s Cathedral.
The Kremlin is open 10:00am until 17:00pm over the Christmas period and tickets for the armoury can be booked in timed slots for 10:00am, 12:00pm, 14:30pm and 16:30pm.
Christmas Market on Red Square
The Christmas market is Red Square is the heart of Christmas in Moscow with a huge range of stalls set up in traditional festive style with small wooden huts adorned with wreaths and packed with gifts, all tied up with the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral as the backdrop. Tourists have a wide variety of stalls to choose from including a range of antiques stalls with Gzhel ceramics and a huge range of food and drink stalls offering Russian delicacies such as Blini as well as traditional German Glühwein to give you that well-needed festive warmth.
The Christmas market runs from 30th November 2019 until 28th February 2020.
Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow
A timeless classic for lovers of ballet and the arts, the Nutcracker is a festive favourite for all the family. The world-famous Bolshoi theatre will be showing live performances of the Nutcracker which sees the Nutcracker-Prince and friends face off against the Mouse King in a dramatic Christmas showdown to save the Christmas tree kingdom.
The Nutcracker will be performed at multiple times a day from 27th December to 8th January; we recommend booking your tickets in advance as you can always count on this ballet selling out.
State Historical Museum, Moscow
Learn more about the Christmas traditions and customs of old Russia at the State Historical Museum. The Christmas market game is an interactive experience that gives children an insight into the state of early Russia, exploring the old Russian monetary system, customs and the functioning of the old Russian city.
The Christmas Fair experience is perfect for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and is open on the 4th, 5th and 8th January. See the State Historical Museum’s website to learn more.

Perfect for kids of all ages, the Moscow Planetarium’s Christmas / New Year toy show delves into the exciting world of space. A dramatic fairy-tale theatre performance will see lost little heroes make there may back across the galaxy, conquering mountains, navigating stars and performing dangerous tricks in order to visit cosmic Santa Claus. The performance will bring together stage and screen with a 25-meter dome-screen bringing the starry sky to life over the heads of the audience.
The New Years’ Toy Story will run from 18th December to 5th January with performances starting at 11:00am and 12:30am Christmas week and varying times from 28th December onwards. See the Moscow Planetarium website for more information and to book your tickets.
