Religion is a huge factor in Russian culture and this is reflected in the beauty of its monasteries, particularly the Novodevichy Monastry, one of the finest examples of 16-19th century architecture.
It was founded by Tsar Vasily III, intended to be not only a religious monastery but also a fortress explaining the huge battle towers and strong walls of the building. With red and white fortified walls and golden domes, it really is one of the most astonishing pieces of architecture in Moscow and isn’t to be missed.
Built on the grounds of a former convent for ladies of noble birth, it is a beautiful setting in a tranquil suburb of southern Moscow, inside a bend of the Moscow River. Stroll through the beautiful gardens in an escape from the busy city centre. The convent acts as a home for those restoring the tradition of nunnery. However, it is full of history, connected with Peter the Great, Princess Sophia and the War of 1812 and acting as the burial ground for many incredible Russians.
Originally used as a burial ground for Moscow’s feudal rulers and church officials, it later laid to rest Russia’s famous intellectuals and merchants and many of the Soviet Union’s most well-known citizens.
In the present day, it’s the chosen burial place for tombs of Russian authors, playwrights, poets, actors, political leaders and scientists adding up to nearly 27,000 burials at Novodevichy. This peaceful and historic atmosphere only adds to the beauty and culture of this incredible city.
On this tour, you’ll also have a guide of the city seeing the famous sites of the Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin Mausoleum and views of the Kremlin and its beautiful cathedrals.
