Myths and Legends of the Eastern Front: Reassessing the Great Patriotic War
An essential part of Russian national identity as much today as in Stalin’s time, the Second World War, known as the Great Patriotic War to those on the Eastern Front, is a defining moment in Russian history often misunderstood in the West. Sokolov offers a thought-provoking study into the heroic, yet of often tragic consequences of the war and the consequences of incompetent and negligent actions on its outcome. He focuses on the many fabrications put forward during the war and immediately afterwards, and how these persist into the present day.
Russia is Burning: Poems of the Great Patriotic War
The second World War had profound effects on the lives of all Russian citizens from those who stayed at home to those fighting on the frontlines. Over 26 million Soviet civilians, servicemen and women were killed fighting the Nazis and as a form of remembrance, it is commemorated in the history of Russian poetry. Poems written by Red Army soldiers were regularly published in newspapers and broadcast on the radio, and this book brings together poems from over fifty poets written on the frontlines as well as civilians facing the atrocities of war first-hand.

Stalingrad
A testament to the resilience of the human spirit, Stalingrad offers a harrowing insight into the Battle of Stalingrad. Set in 1942, Stalingrad focuses on Hitler and Mussolini’s plan for a huge offensive on the Eastern Front that will culminate in the greatest battle in human history. Grossman tells the story from the perspective of several individuals including that of Pyotr Vavilov and the Shaposhnikov family. The war will consume the lives of many, with humanity acting as a key theme for Grossman through the nation and the individual, nature’s beauty and war’s cruelty, as well as love and separation.
The Stuff of Soldiers: A History of the Red Army in World War II through Objects
For history fans who want something different to the usual historiographical tombs of writing, try this quirky and well-pieced book telling the story of the Red Army from the objects in everyday use of the common Red Army solider. Unpack a soldier’s rucksack to reveal the artefacts that shaped the daily experience of those in the Red army, from newspapers they would have read, spoons they used for rations to the great Patriotic War machine: the tank. This book exemplifies the ability of material culture to bring visceral impact to a fascinating period in history. Reviewers loved how well researched and written this book is.
