Itinerary

Ulaanbaatar

The capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, was founded in the 17th century as a Buddhist monastic centre and is the country’s largest city. It is situated in the Tuul River valley, bordering the Bogd Khan Uul National Park and close to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The city has a rich heritage and is home to many famous tourist attractions including the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Zaisan Memorial, Choijin Lama Temple, and the Winter Palace of Bogd Khaan.

Day 1

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Welcome to Ulaanbaatar! After arriving at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khan Airport our driver will pick you up from the arrivals terminal and transfer you to your apartment with a bit of time to settle in. Depending on your arrival time, you may have a bit of time to rest in the hotel, change some currency or take one of our recommended optional excursions to Gandan Monastery or the Zanabar Museum of Arts.

Travel to

Gobi Desert

A large swathe of territory spanning across Southern Mongolia and North China, the Gobi Desert is one of the most popular deserts in the world. It has been an arterial route for merchants throughout history and was home to several important cities along the legendary Silk Road. Today, the desert is renowned for its flowing sand dunes and red rock cliffs.

Day 2

Walk around Ikh Gazriin Chuluu

After breakfast you will meet your guide in the hotel lobby at around 8:30am for a 4-5-hour drive (make sure you take some light reading!) to Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, where you will stay in your very own Ger alongside a local family. Here, you will get the chance to try a delicious home-cooked family meal and other Mongolian fare, before setting off to your last destination of the day. After a short 30-minute car journey, you will get to stretch your legs and take a walk around the many caves and crags of Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, before heading back to your Ger camp for the night.

Day 3

Visit to Gobi Oasis Tree Planting Nursery

After a leisurely breakfast you will head to Mandalgobi where you will stop at the Gobi Oasis tree-planting nursery* for a spot of lunch and help with planting some new seedlings. After planting you will head to the nursery owner’s home for a Mongolian cooking lesson where you will learn to prepare Buuz (steamed dumplings), huushur (fried dumplings) or Khorkhog (steamed mutton with hot stones). What’s more, you will get to try your own culinary creations for dinner!

Day 4

Explore the Sum Khokh Burd and Ongiin Khiid Temples

Today you will journey westwards to the Mongolian heartlands and stop at the Ongiin Khiid and Sum Khokh Burd temple complexes. You will have a chance to look around before having a picnic lunch and continuing to the Saikhan Ovoo district where you will settle into the Ongiin Nuuts Ger Camp (around mid-afternoon). Finally, you will be able to take a stroll around the Ongiin temple complex, enter the temple itself, meet the monks that live there and see the engraved stupa. After spending the afternoon at the complex, you will head back to your Ger camp for the evening.

Day 5

Walk around the Flaming Cliffs

After an evening under the starts in the heart of the Gobi Desert you will continue south to Omngobi province. On your journey you will stop for a picnic, before arriving in Bayanzag* to see the spectacular red sandstone formation known as the ‘Flaming Cliffs’. You will have chance to stretch your legs and have a walk around before continuing onto your Ger camp where you will meet the family you will be staying with this evening.

Day 6

Tour of Yolyn Am and sunset visit to the Singing Dunes

You will have an early trip to Yolyn Am this morning for a chance to get the best photos, see wildlife and avoid the crowds of tourists that appear later in the day. The gorge is one of the most popular natural phenomena in Mongolia consisting of a huge canyon. Your driver will park at the top for plenty of photo opportunities, before allowing you to descend the pathways to the bottom of the Gorge – typically lasting between 1-2 hours.

Day 7

Camel riding across the Dunes

After having breakfast in your Ger camp, you will visit a camel herding family where you will get the opportunity to ride a camel across the desert, climb the famed Singing Dunes and try camel milk and other Mongolian delicacies for yourself. After lunch, you will set out on a 4-hour drive towards Khavtsgait Petroglyphs, where you will get the chance to explore the rocky outcrops and search for the many ancient engravings that have been carved into the rocks. Finally, you will head over to your Ger camp for your last evening in the Gobi Desert.

Day 8

Flight to Ulaanbaatar

Your final day will consist of a flight back to Ulaanbaatar, after which you will get some free time to explore, do some shopping or simply relax at your homestay. You will visit another of Ulaanbaatar’s famous restaurants for a farewell dinner.

Day 9

Departure from Ulaanbaatar
