Itinerary

Khabarovsk

A large city situated on the Amur River in South-eastern Russia, Khabarovsk is the largest city and the administrative center of Khabarovsk Krai. It lies just 14 miles from the border with China and was named “Boli” when it was part of the Chinese Empire. The city has a rich history and culture and is best known for the dazzling Cathedral of the Assumption and the popular Komsomolskaya Square.

Day 1

Arrival in Khabarovsk

After meeting your driver at the airport, you will be taken to your hotel where you will check in before having some free time to explore Khabarovsk for yourself. Tomorrow you will start your authentic camping adventure and begin exploring the Far East of Russia.

Travel to

Nikolaevsk-on-Amur

A port town in Khabarovsk Krai, Nikolaevsk-on-Amur is situated on the left bank of the Amur River and is the closest settlement to the Strait of Tartary separating the mainland from Sakhalin. The settlement and surrounding area have a long history dating from the Middle Ages under the people of Nivkh, Oroch and Evenki. In the 13th century, the area was occupied by the Mongols as a base to launch attacks on neighbouring Japan. Under Russian rule, the settlement quickly became one of the main economic centres on the Pacific coast and was renamed Nikolayevsk-on-Amur in 1856.

After a hotel breakfast, your driver will meet you and transfer you to the airport where you will meet the rest of your group. You will set off on the 1 hour and 30-minute plane journey to Nikolaevsk-on-Amur.

Travel to

Wrangel Bay

Situated on the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East, Wrangel Bay is a picturesque location and frequent stopping point for those travelling over to the nearby Shantar Islands. The Bay is considered the best place in Russia for whale watching, and many rare species including the Bowhead Whale, are known to frequent around the Bay. The Bay is largely calm and typically has favourable conditions for surfing.

Whale Watching at Wrangel Bay

For the next three days you will explore the length of breadth of Wrangel Bay where you will get numerous opportunities to see the Bowhead Whales in their natural habitat from dawn until dusk.

Ongachan Bay

A picturesque bay situated on the Tugur Peninsula; Ongachan Bay is a popular tourist destination for those visiting the nearby Shantar Islands. The Bay is largely sheltered from the winds and has become known as one of the best places to see whales, killer whales and bears that call the region home. The Bay also has a large lake and river nearby where salmon come to spawn each year.

Today, you will have an early start for the journey to Ongachan Bay.

Day 7

Visiting the Shantar Islands

For the next few days, you will embark on a series of boat voyages around the Shantar archipelago. In the morning, you will travel by boat to explore different Islands, and in the afternoon, you will return to the base in Ongachan Bay.

Day 8

Exploring the Shantar Islands

Enjoy a second day exploring the unique Shatar Islands. As part of your three-day experience around the islands you will visit Cape Raduzhniy (Rus. for “Rainbow”), where you can see huge rocks of jasper in different colours, from bright red to green. During a walk on this part of the coast, you can find semi-precious jasper shales, white quartz and marble veins.

Day 9

Exploring the Shantar Islands

Your third and final day of on the Shantar archipelago. Today, you will explore any remaining parts of this fascinating archipelago and see the unique “kekury” marine rocks as well as have the chance to encounter whales, orcas, belugas and seals that gather around the many islands of the Shantar region.

Return to Wrangel Bay

Departure from Khabarovsk
