The administrative centre of Primorsky Krai, Vladivostok meaning ‘Rule in the East’ in Russian, is situated in the far east of Russia around Golden Horn Bay. The city is famous for its harbour location as the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet and being the final stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Tourists are attracted to its many military sites left over from the Russo-Japanese War and the beautiful Russky Island.
Situated in the Lazovsky Reserve on Primorye’s east coast, Petrov Bay (also known as Petrov Island) is considered one of the most picturesque places in the region. The island is home to subtropical forests, abundant natural flowers and pebbly shorelines where seals can regularly be seen. The island’s most unique feature is its magnificent yew groves which is home to many trees that have been there for centuries.
The Lazovsky Reserve
Situated on the south-eastern slopes of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range, next to the Sea of Japan, the Lazovsky Reserve is an important natural area and protected region that is home to some of Russia’s most unique flora and wildlife. The reserve has an abundance of pristine beaches and is commonly considered to be one of the most beautiful locations in Primorye and Russia as a whole. The reserve is 95% forested, with the largest stand of yew trees in the Russian Far East and is home to 60% of the species in the Priomorky region.
A serene bay situated in southern Sikhote-Alin, Zerkalnaya Bay is well known for its beautiful shores, white granite stone outcrops, and abundant flora. The Bay is well sheltered and typically has ideal conditions for swimming, surfing and snorkelling. The bay is also close to one of the most impressive capes in Primorsky, the Cape of Four Rocks.
Situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan, Terney is the administrative centre of Terneysky, Primorsky Krai. The bay on which the village is located was discovered in 1787 by Jean-François de La Pérouse on his way from Manila to Avacha Bay along the coast. The Bay was named after the French navigator Admiral Charles d’Arsac de Ternay, and the present Russian settlement, Terney Village, was founded in September 1908.
Situated in the northern Primorye region of Russia, Amgu Canyon (also known as Amgu Gorge) is a natural landmark created by the surging Black Shaman Falls, a popular tourist destination in the region. The territory has formed part of several local kingdoms over the centuries, most notably the Balhae kingdom in the 8th century, and traces of them can still be found today. The area is also home to the elusive Blakiston’s Fish Owl.
