A variant of the traditional Trans-Siberian Railway, the Trans-Mongolian is one of the best ways to reach and explore Mongolia and passes between Moscow and Beijing visiting the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on the way. The train journey itself offers diverse, spectacular views from the alpine forest regions of Siberia to the vast, arid Gobi Desert before skipping through the lush landscapes of China.
Day 4
Travelling through European Russia
You will spend the day on the train, heading past the cities of the Golden Ring, the great industrial city of Kirov and finally the ex-military city of Perm, at the eastern most edge of European Russia, before crossing through the Ural Mountains and into Asia.
Day 5
Venturing into Siberia
Passing through the previously forbidden Soviet city of Yekaterinburg, you will spend the day on the train while it leaves the eastern foothills of the Ural mountains and heads for Novosibirsk; the largest city in Siberia, and the third largest in Russia, behind only Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Day 6
Heading into Asia
Enjoy your day on the train, travelling along the seemingly limitless tracks, and through the incredible forests of Siberia, you will pass the mighty Altai region, crossing the River Yenisei at Krasnoyarsk, before heading deep into Asia.
Day 7
Lake Baikal and the Mongolian Border
Travelling through Irkutsk and then past the awesome, and unique, Lake Baikal (the world’s largest fresh water lake), you will then spend the day on the train continuing on to the mountains that border Mongolia.
Leaving the last major Russian city at Ulan-Ude, you will cross the border into Mongolia, heading onwards to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on the edge of the Gobi desert.
Day 8
The Gobi Desert and the Chinese Border
Once through the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, you will spend your last, full, day on the train, as it continues on through the majestic Gobi desert and on towards the Chinese border in the south.
